What's the Difference Between FCL and LCL Shipping?

When you ship goods by sea, one of the first decisions is whether to book a full container (FCL) or share one (LCL). The choice affects cost, speed, security and how smoothly your goods clear at a Nigerian port.

This guide explains the difference between FCL and LCL shipping, how each is priced, and how to decide which is right for your cargo.

Key takeaways

  • FCL means you book a whole container at a flat rate. LCL means you share and pay per cbm.
  • A 20ft container holds about 33 cbm, a 40ft about 67 cbm and a 40ft high cube about 76 cbm.
  • FCL is faster and safer. LCL suits small volumes.
  • FCL often becomes better value at around 8–15 cbm.

What is FCL (Full Container Load)?

With FCL, you book an entire container for your goods. The container is loaded (stuffed) at your supplier's premises or a warehouse, sealed, and delivered to the port. It stays sealed until it reaches destination, unless Customs opens it for examination.

You pay a flat rate per container, whether it is full or not.

What is LCL (Less than Container Load)?

With LCL, your goods share a container with cargo from other shippers. A freight forwarder or consolidator:

1. Receives your cargo at a Container Freight Station (CFS) in the origin country. 2. Loads it with other customers' cargo. 3. Ships the container. 4. Unloads (devans) it at a destination CFS, where each consignment is separated and cleared.

You pay per cubic metre (cbm) or per tonne, whichever is greater, usually with a 1 cbm minimum.

Standard container sizes

40ft standard67 cbm26–28 tonnes55–58 cbm

Actual payload depends on the carrier, container and road weight limits at origin and destination. Heavy cargo like tiles or steel often "weighs out" before it "cubes out", a 20ft is often better for dense cargo.

Indicative sea freight costs from China to Lagos (2026)

  • 20ft FCL: about US$3,000–3,600.
  • 40ft FCL: about US$3,150–3,850.
  • LCL: about US$400–450 per cbm.

Freight only; indicative September 2026 market ranges. Duties, port charges, clearance and delivery are additional.

Notice how close 20ft and 40ft rates are. Per cubic metre, a well-filled 40ft is usually the cheapest way to ship.

Where is the FCL vs LCL break-even point?

Compare LCL cost per cbm with an FCL rate spread over your volume, plus destination charges.

Example (freight only):

  • LCL at US$430/cbm × 8 cbm = US$3,440.
  • A 20ft FCL at around US$3,300 costs about the same, and you get the whole container, faster release and less handling.

Once destination CFS and devanning charges for LCL are added, many importers find FCL becomes better value somewhere between roughly 8 and 15 cbm, depending on the lane and season. For very dense cargo, weight also matters.

Rule of thumb: if you are over about half a 20ft container, get both FCL and LCL quotes.

When to choose LCL

  • Your shipment is small (1–10 cbm).
  • You are testing a new product or supplier.
  • You order frequently in small quantities.
  • Cash flow is tight and you do not want to buy more stock than you need.
  • Goods are not fragile or high-theft.

When to choose FCL

  • You have enough volume to fill most of a container.
  • Goods are high-value, fragile or theft-prone.
  • You want faster and more predictable clearance.
  • You are consolidating orders from multiple suppliers. See cargo consolidation.
  • You want delivery direct to your warehouse in the sealed container.

LCL and customs clearance in Nigeria

LCL has extra steps at destination. After arrival, the container is moved to a CFS or bonded facility, devanned, and each shipment cleared separately. This can add days. And if another shipper's goods in your container have documentation problems or trigger an examination, the whole container can be delayed before devanning.

With FCL, your container's clearance depends only on your documents. See how long customs clearance takes.

FCL-specific costs to plan for

  • Container deposit or container insurance with the shipping line.
  • Demurrage and detention if the container is not returned on time.
  • Haulage of the full container to your warehouse and return of the empty.
  • Unloading labour at your premises.

Tips for shipping LCL well

  • Use strong export packaging and pallets.
  • Label every carton with shipping marks.
  • Choose a consolidator with reliable destination CFS operations.
  • Ask about all destination charges upfront.

Tips for shipping FCL well

  • Plan the load to maximise space and weight distribution.
  • Get photos of loading and the seal.
  • Check free days for demurrage and detention.
  • Arrange delivery and unloading in advance.

Frequently asked questions

What does FCL mean in shipping?

Full Container Load: you book the entire container for your cargo.

What does LCL mean in shipping?

Less than Container Load: your cargo shares a container with other shippers and you pay per cubic metre.

How many cbm fit in a 20ft container?

About 33 cbm internal volume, with around 25–28 cbm practical loading space.

Is LCL slower than FCL?

Usually yes, because of consolidation at origin and devanning at destination.
